Empowering Change,
Defending Rights

Shoaib is a barrister and a solicitor-advocate. He is Vice Chair of the Human Rights Lawyers Association and sits on the Law Society’s Human Rights Committee. Shoaib has worked with some of the UK’s leading human rights NGOs in various roles and is a media commentator on legal issues. He has been dealing with legal cases for 20 years and was Called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2007. He has been a solicitor since 2010, and has dealt with legal cases at all levels, including the European Court of Human Rights. His expertise extends to immigration law, asylum law, family law and other areas of law with human rights aspects.

Shoaib is particularly interested in the standards of human rights-related coverage in UK media. This includes not only writing for the media and commenting on legal developments, but also attempting to ensure accuracy in the media generally. He often engages with the media directly, in order to ensure fair coverage of human rights and the legal system. His complaints have resulted in numerous media corrections about the law and human rights, and this led to one tabloid accusing him of having “appointed himself as some sort of watchdog” on such issues.

Shoaib regularly speaks at and chairs legal conferences and seminars. He has shared the stage with senior lawyers and judges, including the President of the European Court of Human Rights, and organised high-level events himself too. Newspapers have provided staff with training and guidance as a direct result of his complaints, and promised to do more to ensure accuracy. He has also been invited to meet with newspapers’ senior management to discuss how coverage of legal issues can be improved and made fairer

Shoaib is regularly invited to speak to the media about legal current affairs and developments in the law and human rights. His writing and commentary has been published in almost all mainstream British newspapers, including the Guardian, the Telegraph, the Independent, the Sun, the Daily Mail and the Express. He has appeared on many radio and TV channels including the BBC, CNN, Sky News, LBC and other UK and international channels.
